Growing in His Loveliness
Happy Nativity Season Everyone! In light of this blessed time, one of the most important things we must consider is how Jesus Christ being born applies to our individual lives. The nature of Our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ’s birth confuses the believers and nonbelievers alike. However, we must not be confused by it, but rather question its purpose for us. Why would something that happened over 2000 years ago still apply to me? St Athanasius highlights Our Lord’s purpose for the world in his book, On the Incarnation: “The Lord did not come to make a display. He came to heal and to teach suffering men. For one who wanted to make a display, the thing would have been just to appear and dazzle the beholders. But for Him Who came to heal and to teach the way was not merely to dwell here, but to put Himself at the disposal of those who needed Him…” With this in mind, we can use the same reasoning for our calling. Just as our Lord came to serve, we must serve like Him. Just as our Lord healed, we must heal. But can we heal if we are not healed, and can we fill if we are not filled? The beauty of Jesus, the thing that makes Him different from any other being that has ever existed, is His most sacrificial Love. He provides a Love that nourishes, soothes, fulfills, and completes the one who accepts it, even at the cost of His own humanity. It is a humble Love, a powerful Love, a Love that becomes a lifestyle. A Love that I am given even when I do not ask for it. A Love that knocks on my door every day, but I cannot recognize or hear because I leave the door shut.
How can I open this door and recognize Him? I must learn about Him. To grow with God, I must learn who He is first. I must open one of the most accessible resources, Scripture, and learn. I must ask questions. I must break down my own walls so He can rebuild my broken pieces and make them wonderful, like Himself. I must tell Him that I love Him. I love you Lord, may I learn to not be stubborn in my ways, may I learn to let Your most gentle Love in, a Love that is patient and kind, a Love that wants to protect me and help me and nourish me. It is when I let your presence grow and thrive within me that I also become beautiful and lovely.
“Since love grows within you, so beauty grows. For love is the beauty of the soul.” (Saint Augustine)
